Not All Whole Grain Pastas Are the Same We all know the benefits of eating pasta; it’s low in fat and sodium, cholesterol-free and a source of protein. Pasta also is a complex carbohydrate, which gives us much needed energy all day long. Whole wheat and whole grain pasta options are now available that take healthy eating up a notch. But don’t be fooled—not all whole grain pastas are the same.
Some pasta manufacturers have taken a “halfway” approach when producing whole grain pasta by utilizing 51% whole grain ingredients and using other ingredients to make up the other 49%. While these products make the claim “whole grain,” they really only deliver 51% of the whole grain goodness. Look closely at the label. Unless “100%” is specifically called out, the product is likely only partially whole grain. Thanks to innovative technology, Mueller's has introduced the first of its kind 100% Whole Grain Pasta that combines the health benefits of 100% whole grain with amazing taste and texture not yet seen on the market. Durum whole wheat flour is the only ingredient listed on the package. Think about that. Not many packaged products have just one simple, wholesome ingredient. Mueller's 100% Whole Grain Pasta is high in fiber, all natural and heart healthy. (Diets rich in whole grain foods and other plant foods and low in saturated fat and cholesterol may reduce the risk of heart disease.) Mueller's offers 100% Whole Grain spaghetti, elbows, penne and angel hair pasta, which received the Whole Grain Council’s “100% Whole Grain” stamp of approval. Now there’s no taste trade-off. Mueller's 100% Whole Grain Pasta provides a consistently perfect balance of whole grain goodness and 100% Mueller's deliciousness! |

It is true that whole wheat and whole grain pastas are a great source of fiber. The USDA Dietary Guidelines recommend six servings of grains per day—at least half from whole grains. Although some like the nutty, robust flavor and texture of whole grains, many are more used to the traditional, lighter taste and texture that we have come to expect with pasta. Therefore, convincing our families to try something new for the health benefits can be challenging.
